a little about..

kohk & sahk

The literal translation of Kohk & Sahk (pronounced kouk and sauk) is “mortar and pestle.” Unlike their counterparts, the Lao version rustic clay composition allows a more effective result of pounding ingredients into a paste. Laos is the home of many spectacular dishes that require the distinctive mashed texture that comes from working with the earthen kohk & sahk, such as the traditional thum mak houng (green papaya salad) and larb pa (fish croquettes). The kohk & sahk, ubiquitous in all Lao households, is a unique kitchen tool that is the perfect symbol for Lao culture and cuisine.
